xli
I browse my directories with a shell. I occasionally come across images and I don't want to go back to my browser or use some other GUI program to view them. I just want to type command - the same way I type xpdf - to view the image. xv is non-free.
Ubuntu has an xli packages which works nicely. Remember r and l rotate the image. Just use q to quit.
